FRISCO, Texas – Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones confirmed on 105.3 The Fan that linebacker DeMarvion Overshown would need surgery on his right knee, ending his 2024 season and likely sidelining him for the foreseeable future.
"I don't know at this time the time date on his rehab, but I just can't tell you how bad I feel for him." Jones said.
Overshown's right leg was rolled up on by a Bengals offensive lineman in the fourth quarter of Dallas' 27-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. He stayed on the ground in serious pain, and his teammates immediately motioned for help from the training staff on the sidelines. Following the loss, head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Overshown's injury was severe.
"It's of serious nature I'm told, that's really all I know. It didn't look good." McCarthy said.
Before the start of his rookie season last year, Overshown tore his ACL in his left knee, where he was forced to missed the entirety of the season. With this season ending injury, the Cowboys now lose their second leading defensive player in both tackles and sacks.
"He's just been through that mental and physical rehab on his other knee, to turn around and have to go through that again is…" Jones said. "The toughest time for a player, and you all see the loss and what it's going to mean for us in our remaining four games."
Once Overshown was helped back into the locker room, there was a notable energy shift for the Dallas defense as his teammates and coaches felt his absence, and the thought of the severity of the injury hit them hard.
"I think the whole sideline felt that because it didn't look good…" McCarthy said. "I know it definitely hit a lot of the guys."
In the locker room after the game, Micah Parsons had tears in his eyes talking about the injury to his new partner in crime and "little bro," who he's meshed extremely well with when both are on the field at the same time.
"He don't deserve that. He don't. That's my little bro, man…" Parsons said. "He's been through so much. It's not fair to him."
Overshown took to social media after the game seemingly confirming the severity of his injury in a post on X.
"Wouldn't want this for anyone else! One of God's toughest soldiers… Keep me in your prayers…" Overshown said in his post.
Additionally, Overshown again posted on social media Tuesday morning replying to a X post that inferred Overshown could possibly become a "What if?" story because of the injury. He quickly shut any thought of that down.
"Guarantee I won't." Overshown said in response.
Going forward, the Cowboys will likely turn to rookie Marist Liufau to take Overshown's spot on the field. Liufau made an impact in Overshown's absence in the loss last night as well, getting one and a half sacks in the fourth quarter alone, the first of his career, to go along with two tackles, a tackle for loss, and two quarterback hits.
