Scout’s Eye: Donovan Wilson Runs With The 1’s
The Cowboys are back at The Star, and Bryan Broaddus had a bird's eye view of their first practice inside Ford Center.

Good for the defensive coaches to give Donovan Wilson a shot with the first defense during practice. The coaches paired Wilson with Xavier Woods while Jeff Heath took snaps with the second unit. Wilson split reps with Woods as the down safety in the box. He tagged off Tony Pollard when the ball bounced to the edge and he was in position to make the stop. Wilson also got to deal with Jason Witten down low and was able to maintain his position throughout the route.

Randall Cobb has made a career of making amazing receptions, but the one he had on Jourdan Lewis might have been one of his best. Lewis, who at times has had terrible luck when it comes to defending these types of plays. He's generally in outstanding position and somehow the ball manages to end up in the receiver's hands. When Dak Prescott let go of the ball, I thought it was going to be an interception. But somehow, Cobb came back toward Lewis and then leaped over Lewis' right shoulder to haul the pass in just as Lewis was extending his arms. Cobb secured the ball and turned up the field as Lewis tumbled to the ground in disbelief.

Nice quick move by Christian Covington to beat Connor Williams for a sack on Dak Prescott. Covington lined up on Williams' inside shoulder and crossed his face. Williams was not expecting the move and was unable to even lay a hand on him. It was a tough snap for Williams, who has done a nice job this entire camp with the added weight. It hasn't been easy to defeat him but Covington got the best of him.

Sean Lee was back on the practice field and made his presence known on one of the first plays of team period. The offense attempted to run a toss sweep to Lee's side with La'el Collins pulling to the outside. Lee took on Collins with his inside shoulder, stopping Collins' momentum. With the edge secure, it allowed Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch to fill in the alley. Give a tip of the cap to Dorance Armstrong, who also beat the block of Jamize Olawale to clog up things to the inside, as well.

Count me as a fan of Kellen Moore and the way he is using Tavon Austin. Moore has found a way to put him on one side of the field and run him on deep crossing routes behind other developing routes. With Austin's speed and -- more importantly -- lack of height, it makes it hard for the secondary to pick him up with all the movement in front of them. Moore moved the pocket with Prescott drawing the defender's eyes to him as Austin went flying down the field in the opposite direction. There was no one within eight yards of Austin when Prescott hit him with the ball. Love the idea and design of the play.

What a heads up play by Anthony Brown to come off his coverage and pick up a wide open Randall Cobb out of the slot. When Cobb cleared Jourdan Lewis, there was no one in position to pick him up. Prescott saw the same thing as Cobb and fired the ball in his direction. Brown was aware what was happening and somehow managed to put himself in position over Cobb's right shoulder, and with his off-hand, knock the ball away without making contact with Cobb. It was the type of play that coaches put on their teaching reel in order to show how to play the position.

What a clutch play by Michael Gallup during the Compete Period. With the first two plays of the series not going as planned, Dak Prescott ripped a pass to Gallup on a deep in-cut with Anthony Brown all over him. As Gallup extended for the ball, so did Brown. As a result, it was knocked up in the air. Gallup was able to maintain his focus and pull the ball down for the reception to pull the offense out of the hole.

On the positive side of the kicking situation. Brett Maher did not miss a field goal during the kicking portion of practice. Maher also drilled a 50-yard field goal from the middle of the field to finish a drive. In talking to coaches about Maher's camp so far, they're still confident in him and are going to continue to give him every opportunity necessary to help him along.
